Night photography, certainly for me, is the biggest challenge. I've found
that when I simply try to replicate the rally images I take in daylight, I
fail miserably. The camera gear we use simply isn't well suited to high-speed
rally action photography at night.

What does the camera need in order to take
sharp images of fast moving objects?
Plenty
of light and fast shutter speeds. At night you have no light, as such,
and you can't use fast shutter speeds without significantly reducing the
power output of the flash gun. We expect our flash gun to somehow illuminate
the whole road, we expect the camera exposure system to somehow deal with
the flash reflecting back into the lens, and then we expect a crystal
clear photograph!
How many times have you taken pictures of rally cars at night and all
you get is a brilliant white rally car number plate and nothing else?
Or a brilliant white car door number, or just a picture of rear brake
lights and a number plate?
Basically you need a new approach and experiment with new techniques
that you might not ordinarily use during the day.
